For this easy apple tartlet, you don’t need to make any pastry dough, just a few slices of toast. I made 2 different shapes of apple tartlets with toast. You can try 2 flavors: One is the outer crispy toast wrapped with caramelized apple. The other is the flaky toast with caramelized apple slices. You can eat the hot caramelized apple running out and the flaky toast with sweet and sour apple slices at the same time.
Apple tartlet recipe:
This recipe uses pre-made caramelized apple jams and slices. You can refer to this link: How to caramelize apples. I usually make several apple jams at once, lock them up and use them as jams or toppings. You can find this link here: How to vacuum pack homemade jam. Pre-made jam is a quick and easy way to make apple tartlets anytime, anywhere. Prepared in just 10 minutes to prepare and 20 minutes to bake, you can enjoy a quick version of afternoon tea.
How to make apple tartlet:
For this simple apple tartlet, all you need is some toast, a caramelized apple, and an egg.
- First, remove the skin around the toast.
- Then use a rolling pin to flatten the toast top and bottom, left and right, 2 times each.
- Brush the sides of the toast with egg wash.
- Then place the caramelized apple on the left side of the toast and use a knife to make 3 horizontal cuts on the right side.
- Fold the toast in half.
- Press the sides of the toast in with the tip of a fork to secure the opening. Brush the top of the tartlet with the egg wash.
- Remove the skin around the toast. Then use a rolling pin to flatten the toast top and bottom, left and right, 2 times each. Follow the same steps as above. Brush the sides of the toast with egg wash.
- Place the caramelized apple slices on the top of the toast. Then bake at 180 degrees for 20 minutes.
PRO TIP:
- Roll the toast a few times with a rolling pin to make it flatter. It’ll taste flaky after baking.
- The egg wash is used to glue and color the toast so that it’s a golden brown color after baking.
Substitute:
- Toast – you can use frozen puff pastry as a substitute.
- Caramelized apple – you can use apple jam or any other jam.
- Caramelized apple slices – you can use fresh apple slices without caramelization. Sprinkle some brown sugar over the apple slices and bake them. After baking, they’ll be caramelized, making them sweeter.
You can make a crispy and sweet toast crust from the leftover toast crust as a snack that won’t go to waste. You can learn how in my previous post Crsipy and Sweet Toast Crust Sanck.
What to eat with:
At tea time, apple tartlet with Black Pearl Bubble Tea or fresh taro milk boba is recommended.
For breakfast, scallion pancakes or potstickers are best.
