Hunan beef is a beef stir fry dish served at Chinese restaurants. The authentic Hunan beef recipe is simple-stir fry with thin slices of beef simmered in a soy, chilli, garlic and ginger sauce. These ingredients make a slightly sticky sauce that coats the beef. The dish is often served over steamed rice.

Ingredients

Marinade Beef:

  • 1 pound flank steak
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine or dry sherry

Hunan Beef Sauce:

  • 1/2 teaspoon Chinese black vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Toban Djan (Chili Bean Sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Shaoxing wine
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup water

Instructions

  • Prepare the beef- Slice the flank steak against the grain (the grain is the length of the steak) the long way 1/4 inch think pieces.
    Next, add the rest of the marinade ingredients, mix well and marinate for 10 minutes (though you could even leave it overnight).
  • Mix the sauce- Combine all the sauce ingredients in a medium bowl and stir until fully combined. Set aside.
  • Prepare all the side ingredients, cut peppers, celery, scallions, garlic and ginger.
  • Pan fry beef- Heat up cooking oil in skillet until really hot and then fry the beef slices for around 30 seconds. Transfer out.
  • Sauté the aromatics- To the same skillet add the remaining tablespoon of oil, along with the ginger and garlic to the pan and sauté for 10-15 seconds.
    Then add peppers, celery and scallions to fry for another 10 seconds.
  • Add the sauce and return beef back and give a quick fry. Transfer and serve with steamed rice immediately.
