Hunan beef is a beef stir fry dish served at Chinese restaurants. The authentic Hunan beef recipe is simple-stir fry with thin slices of beef simmered in a soy, chilli, garlic and ginger sauce. These ingredients make a slightly sticky sauce that coats the beef. The dish is often served over steamed rice.
Ingredients
Marinade Beef:

2tablespoonswater
1teaspoonoil
1tablespoonsoy sauce
1tablespooncornstarch
1tablespoonShaoxing wine or dry sherry
Hunan Beef Sauce:
1/2teaspoonChinese black vinegar
1 1/2tablespoons soy sauce
2teaspoonsToban Djan (Chili Bean Sauce)
1tablespoonoyster sauce
2tablespoonsShaoxing wine
1/2teaspooncornstarch
1/3cupwater
Instructions
Prepare the beef- Slice the flank steak against the grain (the grain is the length of the steak) the long way 1/4 inch think pieces. Next, add the rest of the marinade ingredients, mix well and marinate for 10 minutes (though you could even leave it overnight).
Mix the sauce- Combine all the sauce ingredients in a medium bowl and stir until fully combined. Set aside.
Prepare all the side ingredients, cut peppers, celery, scallions, garlic and ginger.
Pan fry beef- Heat up cooking oil in skillet until really hot and then fry the beef slices for around 30 seconds. Transfer out.
Sauté the aromatics- To the same skillet add the remaining tablespoon of oil, along with the ginger and garlic to the pan and sauté for 10-15 seconds. Then add peppers, celery and scallions to fry for another 10 seconds.
Add the sauce and return beef back and give a quick fry. Transfer and serve with steamed rice immediately.
