This braised tofu is full of soy sauce and green onions and tastes salty and slightly sweet. It’s best enjoyed with white rice. This dish is so easy and quick to make that even a beginner can learn it on the first try.
Braised tofu recipe
This recipe uses firm tofu, don’t use soft tofu or egg tofu. They’re too watery and won’t shape. The secret to frying the tofu is that you dip each piece of tofu in the pan in oil. This way, skin forms with soft tofu inside so that it absorbs the sauce better and tastes more delicious. This is a very nutritious and quick dish that takes less than 10 minutes An easy dinner for vegetarians.
Ingredients
- Tofu – It’s best to use extra firm or firm tofu. So they can be shaped after frying. Don’t use soft tofu or egg tofu, they aren’t suitable for frying.
- Scallions – cut them into 1 1/2-inch (4-cm) pieces. They’re added at the end to add flavor and spice to the dish.
- Oyster sauce – if you’re vegetarian, you can use vegan oyster sauce, which is made from mushrooms. You can also ignore it and just add soy sauce. The oyster sauce will add more flavor to the dish.
- Soy sauce – it’s used for most Chinese dishes.
- Sugar – to make this dish not only salty but also sightly sweet.
How to make
- Cut the tofu into 2 pieces, each piece cut into 6 pieces, for a total of 12 pieces.
- Heat the skillet over medium-high heat and then add the tofu. Each piece of tofu should be dipped in the oil in the pan, so that the tofu will take shape and be tasty after frying.
- The individual pieces of tofu shouldn't stick to each other in the pan. Otherwise, it'll be difficult to flip when turning.
- Don't flip it immediately. Turn it over after three minutes to keep its shape. Fry the other side for about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Turn the heat to medium, add soy sauce, oyster sauce and sugar and stir gently so that each piece of tofu can absorb the sauce.
- Add the scallion whites and turn the tofu over so that the tofu on the other side can also absorb the sauce. (If there's not enough water, add 1 tablespoon of water).
- Finally, add green scallions, stir gently and fry the scallions for about 1 ~ 2 minutes.
- Ready to serve.
